The Global Infectious Diseases (GID) Scholars program of CIDEIM in partnership with Yale University offers a unique career development opportunity for post-doctoral scientists who are committed to develop their research career in Colombia. The GID Scholars Program will provide team-mentored two-year research fellowships to establish a career in translational research on human infectious disease in CIDEIM, in Cali, Colombia.

This call for applications is directed to early career investigators who have a doctoral degree in microbiology, immunology, or other disciplines of laboratory–based biomedical science with emphasis on human infectious disease. Candidates should have completed at least one year of post-doctoral research training.  Research experience in mycobacteriology, antimicrobial resistance, and virology are of particular interest.

The GID Scholars program is supported by Global Infectious Diseases (GID) Research Training award funded by the Fogarty International Center of the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH). The overall goal of this training grant is to strengthen the investigator base in infectious disease research in CIDEIM, and research and training capacity to enable implementation of the results of this research in prevention and control practices and policy.

In order to build research capacity within the institutional context, the GID Scholar incorporates five fundamental components: 1) Constitution of an integrated scientific and career development mentorship team tailored to the research focus of the selected candidate; 2) Building a research track record; 3) Establishing a community of collaborators; 4) Development of an international collaborative grant proposal; and 5) Strengthening research planning and management skills.

The GID scholar will receive full-time salary support for 24-months to assure exclusive dedication to the career development program, as well as seed support for research materials and related expenses. Additionally, travel and allowance for up to 3 months in residence at Yale University, travel and per diem for a 3-week internship in a non-academic public or private sector institution relevant to health research (such as industry, the Ministry of Health, Colombian National Institute of Health), and travel and per diem to present research results in a national and an international congress or conference.

Eligibility criteria:

· Early career investigators who have a doctoral degree in microbiology, immunology, pharmacology or other disciplinary areas of translational biomedical research with emphasis on human infectious disease and have completed at least one year of post-doctoral research training.

· Demonstrable experience in research, including, but not limited to host-pathogen interactions, immunology, pharmacology, molecular epidemiology, pathogenesis.

· Commitment to develop a research career in Colombia.

· Fluency in English and Spanish (Listening comprehension, speaking, and professional written communication).

· Translational research involving laboratory analyses, public health and community outreach, requires intense full-time on-site dedication. Therefore, the disposition to develop a research career in CIDEIM and establish residence in the municipality of Cali are criteria of eligibility.
